These days, people look for original ways to connect from home—video calls, singing on balconies, or creating a website. One of the most effective ways to interact in real time is live streaming, also known as going live.
Going live may seem technical, but it’s actually simple and accessible. With many easy-to-use platforms, you can start your own live videos in minutes.
This article covers everything you need for a live stream—from recording equipment to the best platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

Essential recording equipment
Streaming isn’t hard, but you need some hardware and software. Here’s what you need to get started:
- Good internet connection: Make sure you’re in a place with stable, reliable internet.
- Quality microphone: Use a professional mic for clear sound and less background noise.
- Good video camera: An HD webcam or your phone’s camera works for most streams. For higher quality, consider a compact or DSLR camera.
- Tripod: Stabilizes your camera or phone for steady shots.
- Encoder: Converts your video for live streaming. Not always required, but Streamlabs OBS is an easy option.
Platforms for live streaming
Once your equipment is ready, get to know the different platforms. The most popular are:
- Your own website
- YouTube
How to go live on YouTube

- Create a YouTube channel.
- Go to “YouTube Studio” and click “Go Live” to enable live streaming.
- Download an encoder if not using a webcam.

- To end, click “End Stream.”
Note: If you use a webcam, you don’t need an encoder—just click the “Webcam” tab to start streaming.

- Tap “End” to finish.
- You can post your video to your timeline or business page for replay.
To go live from a webcam, go to Facebook, click “What’s on your mind?” and press “Live Video.” Then click “Go Live Now” in the left menu.

How to go live on Instagram
Instagram Live is designed for informal, fun interactions. It’s a great way to promote your account and build real connections. To go live:
- Open Instagram and tap the camera icon at the top, or swipe left to “Direct.”
- Tap “LIVE” at the bottom.
- Tap the circle button to start streaming. The app will check your connection and confirm you’re live.
- When finished, tap “End” (top right).
- To share your live video, tap “Share to Story.” You can add hashtags and location stickers. Remember, Stories disappear after 24 hours.
And that’s it—live streaming is that simple!
