Why Instagram limits the reach of your posts

Are you noticing that your Instagram posts are getting less and less reach?
In recent months, a rumor has spread that Instagram limits the visibility of content—similar to what happens on Facebook—and that the only way to “beat the algorithm” is to invest in advertising or sponsored posts.

However, beyond these comments, there are certain practices you might be carrying out without realizing it that actually significantly reduce the exposure of your content. To clear up doubts, the platform itself has published a list of “not recommended” actions, which can lead to a penalty commonly known as shadowbanning.

What is shadowbanning? Basically, it is a system that causes your post to be shown to fewer followers or appear lower in their update feed, meaning a large part of your potential audience never sees it.

At Cuernosoft, we want to help you avoid these practices and improve your content strategy. That’s why we share Instagram’s official recommendations so your posts maintain the best possible reach.

Bad practices that limit the visibility of your content (according to Instagram)

1. Including watermarks from other social networks

Instagram does not like the promotion of competing platforms. Therefore, when it detects the watermark of another network—such as TikTok—it penalizes your content, significantly limiting its reach.

Tip: Your own logo or brand is not penalized, as it is part of your company’s identity.

2. Posting content that has already been shared on Instagram

The platform gives priority to original content. When it detects duplicates, it favors the original post and “hides” the copies.

Tip: If you want to share content from another account, use the Remix or Collab features in Stories. This way, you add your own perspective and provide value instead of simply duplicating the content.

3. Posting Reels that are too long

Instagram has confirmed that, when showing Reels to users who do not follow you, it prioritizes those that are 90 seconds or less.

Tip: Keep your Reels between 30 and 90 seconds long to maximize the chance of reaching new audiences.

4. Using clickbait

Clickbait or using strategies to artificially “inflate” your community is also penalized. The best thing is to focus on building a real community, with genuine interactions and quality content.

Of course, any content that violates Instagram’s rules can be removed. But in addition, the platform restricts the reach of posts it considers inappropriate, such as:

  • Topics that promote self-harm, self-mutilation, suicide, or eating disorders.
  • Content that trivializes death or depression, or makes fun of these topics.
  • Posts that incite or normalize violence (for example, fight videos).
  • Accounts categorized by Instagram as “not recommended.”
  • Sexually explicit or aggressive content.
  • Content that promotes the use of regulated products.

Before thinking that the algorithm is against you or that the only way out is to pay for advertising, check if any of these practices may be affecting your posts. Maintaining an original, relevant, and genuine content strategy is the best way to stand out on Instagram, avoid penalties, and achieve greater reach among your audience.
