Kingston FURY, a division of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., understands the importance of configuring the right memory and storage to ensure optimal PC gaming performance. This Gamer Month, which also marks one year since the launch of the Kingston FURY line dedicated to performance and overclocking enthusiasts, Kingston shares advice on the most suitable memory capacity for the most popular games among gamers in Latin America.
How does RAM work?
RAM (random access memory) is the computer’s short-term memory that temporarily holds information the PC needs to access. In contrast, a computer’s HDD or SSD is its long-term memory, where information is stored more permanently. When you launch a game on a PC, all the relevant data the PC may need during gameplay is loaded into RAM. Constantly pulling information from the HDD or SSD is inefficient and much slower. RAM is much faster, so it can load the game and read game data more quickly.
How much RAM do you need for gaming?
The amount of RAM depends on the games you want to play, as RAM requirements differ for each title and game format. For specific games, it’s important to check the system requirements recommended by the game developers.
It’s important to have the right amount of memory for each game because, without enough RAM, the computer won’t be able to store all the information required for the game to run. This will result in frame lag and poor performance.
Kingston shares recommendations on how much memory you need for gaming and provides frames per second (FPS) for four popular games: World of Warcraft, Call of Duty Warzone, Apex Legends, and Fortnite.
4GB
A few years ago, 4GB of RAM would have been enough for gaming, but as games have evolved and become more complex, 4GB is no longer sufficient. Older games may still run with 4GB of RAM, but it’s worth investing in at least 8GB to play a wider range of games. However, games like Valorant, League of Legends (LoL), Minecraft, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, DOTA 2, and GTA 5 should still be playable with 4GB of RAM, though performance may be compromised.
Game | FPS |
World of Warcraft: | 42 FPS |
Call of Duty Warzone: | 43 FPS |
Apex Legends: | 58 FPS |
Fortnite: | 64 FPS |
8GB
8GB of RAM is the minimum amount for any gaming PC. With 8GB of RAM, you’ll be able to play most games on the market without much trouble, but some games may not run at the highest quality and you may need to close other applications. Games like Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Rainbow 6 Siege (R6), and World of Warcraft Shadowlands can be played with 8GB of RAM.
Game | FPS |
World of Warcraft: | 73 FPS |
Call of Duty Warzone: | 61 FPS |
Apex Legends: | 108 FPS |
Fortnite: | 85 FPS |
16GB
16GB is the recommended amount of RAM for playing most games and will provide a noticeable performance boost compared to 8GB. It will also allow you to run background applications without affecting gameplay. It’s recommended to play games like Call of Duty Warzone and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) with 16GB of RAM.
Game | FPS |
World of Warcraft: | 91 FPS |
Call of Duty Warzone: | 69 FPS |
Apex Legends: | 135 FPS |
Fortnite: | 108 FPS |
32GB
32GB of RAM is becoming increasingly popular among gamers, and the FPS boost compared to 16GB is likely the reason. With 32GB, you’ll have an enhanced graphical experience while multitasking in the background, such as live streaming, using Chrome, system software, or Spotify.
Game | FPS |
World of Warcraft: | 103 FPS |
Call of Duty Warzone: | 81 FPS |
Apex Legends: | 143 FPS |
Fortnite: | 115 FPS |
In conclusion, the amount of memory you need for gaming really depends on the games you want to play and how many other applications you have open in the background. While some people can use 8GB for older games, 16GB definitely improves the gaming experience in modern titles while running other tasks. But what about 32GB? 32GB of RAM may seem like a lot, but the FPS difference really shows why so many gaming enthusiasts invest in 32GB for their systems. The latest games are already starting to recommend a minimum of 16GB of RAM. So, if you use your PC for more than just gaming or want to be ready for upcoming releases, 32GB would be the best option.
