Jaime Kunstmann: I like to tell stories, but I like to live them even more.

Behind every amazing image captured by professional and amateur photographers lies an essential detail that often goes unnoticed: storage. For audiovisual arts, including photography, the digital age has created the great challenge of storing large volumes of data and ensuring their integrity in order to capture unforgettable moments without limits. Thanks to technological evolution, there are devices of different capacities that meet all kinds of needs and allow photographers to work with greater peace of mind and confidence.

Just days before World Photography Day, celebrated on August 19, Jaime Kunstmann, renowned Chilean photographer and founder of the creative studio PaloSanto, shares his professional experience as a photographer and audiovisual creator regarding the use of storage devices and how they make his work more efficient.

With several years of experience in the field of photography and filming, Jaime Kunstmann is passionate about capturing special moments both on his personal travels and in projects commissioned by various brands and companies. He has collaborated at major events such as Lollapalooza, captured incredible photographs in unusual places like Iceland and Antarctica, and currently works for various national and international brands.

For Jaime, the camera is an extension of his own creativity; he dedicates a lot of time to planning a photograph to find the ideal moment, which is why the storage medium for preserving that moment becomes so important. “Memory cards are one of those products you might not pay much attention to if they work, but when they stop working you notice immediately, and your creativity suffers as a result,” Jaime comments.

On long production days, he takes thousands of photos that become files of hundreds of GB. Not having to pause mid-session to change memory cards has been a game changer. “Now, with a small 512 GB SD card, you can store an entire advertising campaign that is the result of up to 15 days of pre-production and the work of more than 50 people,” Kunstmann mentions, highlighting the peace of mind he gets from knowing all his important files are safe and available at any time.

Another relevant aspect in a photographer’s work is backing up their work. Kunstmann says he does this based on the time frame he is working in. “I start storing by the dates I’m filming. Then, to free up space, I leave some external SSDs as a base, which I no longer use for working on the computer and instead use only for storage.”

He also adds that it is important to be critical and selective with the material stored so as not to keep what you are no longer going to use and take up more space than necessary.

Another key recommendation for photographers is to keep a backup of the best of the year, so you can, for example, make a reel or short film that can help you land new job opportunities in the future.

Regarding the equipment that cannot be missing from his suitcase when he travels, in addition to his photo and video cameras, Jaime never leaves home without his 1TB external SSDs, as these devices allow him to have a kind of mobile studio in case he needs to edit any material even if he is away from home. He also carries a card holder with SD cards of 512 and 256 GB with fast processing speeds. His suggestion is to have more than one as a backup, especially when doing drone photography.

The storage products Jaime uses are from Kingston Technology. The line of cards are micro SD and SD Canvas React Plus and the SSD is the XS2000. “Storing our material with the backing of a leading storage brand like Kingston is something that gives us peace of mind and makes me very happy,” he said.

The collaboration between Kingston and professionals like Jaime Kunstmann demonstrates the fundamental role that technology plays in the audiovisual world and how Kingston stays at the forefront to meet the ever-evolving demands of content creators.
