Turning on your computer and seeing a message that the operating system was not found can be a nightmare when you’re ready to work or study. To prevent this, it’s important to take care of the health of Solid State Drives (SSD). SSDs are the safest storage medium for any computer—desktop, laptop, or even servers and workstations—because they are more reliable, durable, and last longer than traditional hard drives since they have no moving parts. Under the Kingston Is With You initiative, Kingston Technology Company, a world leader in memory products and technology solutions, recommends some tips to extend the lifespan of SSDs.
In addition to everyday care such as protecting them from power outages, excessive temperatures, or drops, Kingston recommends:
- Always shut down the computer properly; do not force shutdowns
- When purchasing a new SSD, make sure it is one of the latest models
- Back up your data regularly
- Check that BIOS updates related to storage are performed
To make things easier for users, Kingston offers a tool for SSD care (internal or external) known as Kingston SSD Manager (KSM), which can be downloaded for free and is easy to use. With just a few steps, you can check for necessary firmware updates for your SSD. By downloading KSM, users will receive notifications when a new update is available for registered SSDs and can monitor other aspects of the drive such as:
- Health, status, and space usage of the solid-state drive
- View identification data of the drive including name, model, serial number, firmware version, etc.
- View and export detailed reports on the drive’s status
- Update the drive’s firmware
- Securely erase data
“It’s good practice to periodically check the status of SSDs. KSM allows you to continuously monitor the SSD’s health, get important information about drive usage, alert the user to available firmware updates, and investigate issues that could suggest the product’s end of life is approaching,” says Geraldine Stack, SSD and Flash Business Manager for Latin America at Kingston Technology. “If the SSD’s health has dropped significantly during its lifespan, you should consider upgrading to a high-performance drive.”
To install the KSM tool, follow these steps:
- Click the Kingston SSD Manager (KSM) link to start downloading the software.
- Locate the download and extract the contents.
- Run the KSM installer as administrator.
- Follow the instructions in the installation wizard and proceed with installing the KSM software.
- Once installation is complete, a system restart may be required.
With the User Guide, SSD owners will find an in-depth breakdown of the different features, and Kingston support is available to help with any questions that may arise.
