Kingston’s tips for extending the life of your computer

The evolution of computer technologies surprises us year after year with new features, speeds, and performance. These benefits, often driven by software, require hardware to be updated from time to time. However, there isn’t always a budget to buy a new device that meets the workload, so extending the life of your current computer is a very convenient option.

To make your PC or laptop feel like new, you only need to upgrade the storage and RAM—two very affordable components that can improve your device’s performance. Kingston Technology Company, a world leader in memory products and technology solutions, offers different options to increase productivity and have a more efficient workflow.

SSD Storage

Solid State Drives (SSD) are a component increasingly present in computers and have made strong inroads in notebooks. Besides serving as data storage like classic hard drives, their main feature is that they speed up the computer and significantly improve performance, as they are a single-piece semiconductor integrated circuit.

While conventional hard drives (HDD) work with magnetic disks, SSDs use flash memory, similar to what’s found in SD cards or USB drives. This way, SSDs achieve up to 10 times the performance of a hard drive, are more resistant to shocks or vibrations, and emit less noise. The higher speed is evident when processing data much faster, especially when running programs that access large volumes of data, such as the operating system.

The adoption of SSDs has been so significant that there’s also been an evolution in their technology, which is one of the main differences between these drives.

SATA or NVMe PCIe?

SATA SSDs are more common and offer good performance for typical computer applications. The technology dates back to the early 2000s and surpassed the previous technology by 10 to 15 times. But everything evolves, and the standard that will replace SATA and is already gaining ground is NVMe.

NVMe has a different interface, called PCIe, which is three to ten times faster than a SATA drive. This type of SSD is faster because it provides more bandwidth, improving the productivity of applications installed on the computer. For example, for editing complex videos and transferring large amounts of data, NVMe would be a better option. If you only need a system for document writing and regular office work, SATA is perfectly adequate.

RAM Memory

Upgrading to an SSD will improve your PC or laptop’s speed. To add even more speed, you should upgrade the memory. By adding or upgrading RAM capacity, you’ll experience faster page loads and quicker application launches.

RAM capacities have steadily increased in recent years, but their format has also evolved. Today, the standard is 16GB of RAM, though for demanding tasks, 32GB is recommended. For maximum performance, there’s also a 64GB option. As for format, DDR4—common in recent years—has given way to DDR5, the fifth generation of DDR SDRAM, which offers significant improvements in performance and data integrity over the previous generation. Along with substantial increases in speed and capacity, it also reduces voltage.

PC motherboards generally have four slots for connecting RAM. For demanding tasks, such as video games that require high graphics quality, 32GB of RAM is recommended. If multitasking is frequent and you need to use other programs in the background, 64GB is best.

Another very relevant point when choosing memory is the type of computer it will be installed in, as it differs between desktops and notebooks. Desktop RAM is known as UDIMM, while notebooks use SODIMM. This makes selection easier, but it’s still recommended to check memory compatibility for the system you’re buying for.

With the Kingston Memory Finder, you can find the right DRAM for every type of computer.

For those who demand the best results, taking advantage of these computer upgrade options will be an excellent way to optimize workflow in this new year.
